Manuel Steinbauer enthusiastically recalled the small group of the first year, which at that time still consisted of only six students. He revealed that the tiny cohort offered some advantages for students and enabled very intensive interactions with the lecturers. Since the course was new for all participants, it was possible to help shape processes and content.
When asked why he had chosen GCE as a master’s course at the time, he mentioned the relevance and topicality of the subject as well as the possibility to specialize in the field of ecology. During his studies, Manuel Steinbauer particularly liked the insights into politics he received by participating in both international environmental conferences and internal research conferences. The resulting meetings with international scientists aroused his enthusiasm for research. He also learned a lot through summer schools and an internship at WWF Pakistan.

Internationalization of GCE

Prof. Steinbauer welcomed the fact that the GCE programme is now international, because in the first year all fellow students were German-speaking. For this reason, some lectures were held in German, whereas today everything is in English. Since the programme was still being constructed at that time, even more improvisation had been required, while today firmer and proven structures have been established.
Prof. Steinbauer laughingly recalled the participation of his GCE cohort in the so-called “Elite Cup”, an annual one-day football tournament where programmes within the elite network of Bavaria compete against one another. At that time, the GCE football team was still mixed with lecturers and students, but they “lost mercilessly” and ended up placing near the bottom standings.

New courses for GCE

Addressed to current GCE students, Prof. Steinbauer emphasized that GCE course would offer very well-founded and good methods training which, together with the insights into politics, had helped him a lot.
From the upcoming winter semester and onwards, the GCE alumni will be teaching new GCE students as a professor. He has already revealed that his chair will offer lectures on the topic of “Sport Ecology” and “Sustainable Tourism” as well as two methodological courses, one of which will be about the analysis of movement data.
Thus, a member of the first GCE class will now as a professor be teaching students of the 14-year-old GCE master’s programme.

Manuel Steinbauer erzählte begeistert von der keinen Gruppe des ersten Jahrgangs, der damals noch nur aus sechs Studierenden bestanden hatte. Er verriet, dass der kleine Jahrgang einige Vorteile für die Studierenden bot und sehr intensive Interaktionen mit den Dozenten und Dozentinnen ermöglichte. Da der Studiengang für alle Beteiligten neu war, gab es die Möglichkeit Abläufe und Inhalte mitzugestalten.
Auf die Frage angesprochen, weshalb er sich damals für GCE als Masterstudiengang entschieden habe, nannte er die Relevanz und Aktualität des Themas des Studiengangs sowie die Möglichkeit sich auf den Bereich „Ökologie“ spezialisieren zu können. Während des Studiums haben Manuel Steinbauer besonders die Einblicke in die Politik durch die Teilnahme an internationalen Umweltkonferenzen gefallen und die Teilnahme an internationalen Forschungskonferenzen. Die dadurch entstandenen Zusammenkünfte mit internationalen Wissenschaftlern weckten in ihm die Begeisterung für die Forschung. Auch bei den Summer Schools und dem Praktikum beim WWF Pakistan habe er sehr viel gelernt.

Internationalisierung des Studienganges

Prof. Steinbauer begrüßte, dass der GCE-Studiengang heute international zusammengesetzt sei, denn im ersten Jahrgang wären noch alle KommilitonInnen deutschsprachig gewesen. Deswegen fanden früher auch noch manche Vorlesungen auf Deutsch statt, während heute alle englischsprachig sind. Da sich damals noch alles im Aufbau befunden hatte, war auch noch mehr Improvisation gefragt gewesen, während sich heute festere und bewährte Strukturen verfestigt haben.
Lachend erinnerte sich Prof. Steinbauer an die Teilnahme des GCE-Jahrgangs am sog. „EliteCup“, einem eintägigen Fußballturnier, an dem die Elitestudiengänge des Elitenetzwerk Bayerns jährlich teilnehmen können. Damals sei die GCE-Mannschaft noch von Dozenten unterstütz worden, dennoch hätten sie „gnadenlos verloren“ und wären auf den letzten Plätzen gelandet.

Neue Kurse für GCE

An die jetzigen GCE-Studierenden gerichtet, hebt Prof. Steinbauer hervor, dass der Studiengang eine sehr fundierte und gute Methodenausbildung anbieten würde, die ihm zusammen mit den Einblicken in die Politik sehr geholfen habe.
Ab dem kommenden Wintersemester wird der GCE-Alumni nun als Professor die neuen GCE-Studierenden unterrichten. Dabei verrät er bereits, dass sein Lehrstuhl Veranstaltungen zum Thema „Sportökologie“ und „Nachhaltiger Tourismus“ anbieten wird sowie zwei Methodenkurse, wobei es in einem u.a. um die Bewegungsdatenanalyse gehen wird.
Somit wird einer der ersten GCE-Studierenden nun selber als Professor Studierende des mittlerweile 14-jährigen GCE-Masterstudienganges unterrichten.

Think nature and sports at the same time

In a well-attended lecture hall, Prof. Dr. Manuel Steinbauer gave the audience several examples of how the dynamics of ecological systems and the influence of human activities have changed over time. In the future, the former GCE student will research the effects of outdoor sports on nature and how the potential of sports can be used to raise people’s awareness of environmental issues. When asked about the relevance of the interdisciplinary topic “Sport Ecology”, Prof. Steinbauer emphasized two reasons: On the one hand, our society would tend to “think” about nature and sports at the same time, i.e. if we are planning a nature trip, this is often planned as a sporting event. For example, we travel to the Alps because we want to hike or ski there. On the other hand, sports offer a great potential to bring people closer to nature conservation issues.

From GCE to systems paleobiology to sports ecology

Sport ecology was not always the research focus of the interdisciplinary scientist who grew up in Middle Franconia.In 2004, he began his bachelor’s degree in geoecology at the University of Bayreuth and continued his studies from 2006 to 2009 with the then new master’s program Global Change Ecology. This was followed by his doctorate in 2013 and a three-year postdoctoral stay at the University of Aarhus in Denmark. From 2017 to 2019, Prof. Steinbauer was a professor for “System Paleobiology” at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In August 2019, he accepted the call from the University of Bayreuth and returned as a professor for “Sport Ecology”.
Looking back on his time as a GCE student, the 36-year-old particularly emphasized the unique experiences gained through participation in international environmental and scientific conferences as well as the good methodological training provided in the program.
From the coming winter semester, Prof. Steinbauer will teach the new GCE students as a professor.

Natur und Sport gleichzeitig denken

Im gut besuchten Hörsaal verdeutlichte Prof. Dr. Manuel Steinbauer den Zuhörern anhand von mehreren Beispielen, wie sich die Dynamik ökologischer Systeme und der Einfluss menschlicher Aktivitäten im Laufe der Zeit verändert haben. Zukünftig wird der ehemalige GCE-Studierende erforschen, welche Auswirkungen der Outdoorsport auf die Natur hat und wie das Potenzial des Sports genutzt werden kann um Menschen für Umweltthemen zu sensibilisieren.
Auf die Relevanz des fächerübergreifenden Themas „Sportökologie“ angesprochen, hebt Prof. Steinbauer zwei Gründe hervor: Zum einen würde unsere Gesellschaft dazu tendieren Natur und Sport „gleichzeitig zu denken“, d.h. wenn wir einen Naturaufenthalt planen, wird dies häufig als Sportereignis geplant. Wollen wir z.B. in die Alpen fahren, dann, um dort zu wandern. Zum anderen würde der Sport großes Potenzial bieten, den Menschen Naturschutzthemen näher zu bringen.

Von GCE über System-Paläobiologie zu Sportökologie

Sportökologie war nicht immer der Forschungsschwerpunkt des in Mittelfranken aufgewachsenen, interdisziplinär arbeitenden Wissenschaftlers.
2004 begann er den Bachelor „Geoökologie“ an der Universität Bayreuth und setzte das Studium von 2006 bis 2009 mit dem damals neuen Masterstudiengang „Global Change Ecology“ fort. Darauf folgten die Promotion im Jahr 2013 und ein dreijähriger Aufenthalt als PostDoc an der Universität Aarhus in Dänemark. Von 2017 bis 2019 war Prof. Steinbauer Professor für „System-Paläobiologie“ an der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Im August 2019 folgte er dem Ruf der Universität Bayreuth und kehrte als Professor für „Sportökologie“ zurück.
Auf die Zeit als GCE-Studierender zurückblickend, hebt der 36-Jährige besonders die einzigartigen Erfahrungen durch die Teilnahme an internationalen Umweltkonferenzen und wissenschaftlichen Tagungen hervor sowie die gute Methodenausbildung.
